These British Ebonised chess men are expertly carved in the easily recognisable
Staunton design and yet still offer superb quality and value for money. From the tip of the King's finial through to the mitre of the bishop down to the crenellations of the rook, this quality of finish and attention to detail is far beyond what you would expect from such a modestly priced set.
Each ornament starts life as a solid piece of boxwood, which is then expertly turned, carved and finished. One half of the pieces undergo 'ebonisation' - a very convincing process that gives them the look of real ebony, without the price tag, and all pieces undergo weighting and felting on their bases.
Despite its entry level status, this set includes 4 queens.
With a king height of 8.89 cm, it makes them ideal for this 48.26 cm veneer chess board. With fine quality inlays, this is a classic design available from most chess outlets. Our version however has been crafted in Europe to an exceptional standard and to represent superb value for money. This particular board is clear of any notation which results in a clean contemporary look and green felt feet on the base protect your table tops.
A heavy board with a solid feel, and very well finished, it is the perfect battleground for these British Ebonised Chess Men.
Clean and basic, it's the design you've seen for years, being used in famous tournaments, often with very famous players or celebrities sat either side of it. The reason this board has been used so much is that it complements so many different styles of pieces. It works well with brown wooden chessmen but looks equally at home with these black ones.
The Regency Chess Company is proud to be selling the very best version of this classic design. Commonly, this board was made in Eastern Europe or China with many sellers selling versions of varying quality. We created our own version that's been manufactured by the Spanish chess board maker
Rechapados Ferrer, so we are confident that our version is more precise, cleaner and made using better materials than all the others on the market. If you are looking for a durable, high quality wooden chess board in a traditional and classic style, then this is it.
Plantation wood used - from a sustainable source in Europe.
If you can bear to put your chess pieces away when not in use, then we have added this quality fabric chess bag for storage purposes.
Made from a rich burgundy colour, the top of the bag has metal eyelets and a cord to seal the chess pieces safe and sound inside.
