Hnefatafl, one of history's greatest board games, was highly popular during the Dark Ages in Northern Europe. It was a favorite in Viking homes, and the attacking force had the advantage - much like the Viking's success in raids. The Viking chiefs were represented by the King, and over time, the game evolved and was discovered on archaeological sites. Manuscripts have revealed the proper way to play the game, and there were various versions with different boards, pieces, and rules. Although it declined in popularity with the rise of chess in the 11th century, this Hnefatafl set evokes a medieval feel with its printed woven textile "board". The simpler design of most pieces found to date suggests the common people's love for this game.
