THE HISTORY
‘Robbing from the rich to give to the poor' was how Robin Hood became an English Folklore hero.
Traditionally portrayed as being adorned in Lincoln green and supported by his band of Merry Men, Robin Hood became a popular figure in the late medieval period. To this day, he continues to be widely represented in films, television and literature.
THE PIECES
Looking every bit the character we all learned about in our childhood, the Robin Hood king in this set is superbly detailed. With his bow, quiver and sword and even a dagger tucked into his belt, he is a force to be reckoned with. Maid Marian stands elegantly at his side in a long flowing cream gown whilst a fearsome King John looks on.
Who else but Friar Tuck could play the the bishop. He is typically depicted with staff and ale in hand and a lamb at his feet. Castle guards and the Merry Men make up the knights and the pawns on both sides. Each piece beautifully decked in their Lincoln Green and chain mail.
The rooks too are beautifully ornate, portrayed as trees with little dwellings hidden in them for Robin Hood and as regal castles for King John. Without doubt each piece is an ornament in its own right.
Matched with our 40 cm Spanish walnut and maple board, this makes a stunning chess set for any Robin Hood fan or chess enthusiast. These Robin Hood chessmen are also available without a board.
