The name Harrwitz is a tribute to Daniel Harrwitz, a German-born chess master of the 19th century. Known for his skill and bravery in blindfold games, he played against esteemed opponents such as Howard Staunton, Adolf Anderssen, and Paul Morphy. Sadly, he had to retire due to health issues and passed away at the age of 62 in 1884.

The dark pieces undergo an ebonising process while the light pieces are antiqued, resulting in a sophisticated and professional finish that also protects the wood. This exquisite chess set features authentic reproduction pieces, complete with the original markings of the king's crown adorning the black knight, black rook, white knight, and white rook. These pieces are strategically placed on the king's flank to easily identify their position on the board. In addition, the 3.5 inch (89 mm) king and all other pieces are weighted for stability and have a protective felt base. To complement such grandeur, we have handpicked the 19.7 inch Black Anegre and Maple board, meticulously crafted by renowned board makers Rechapados Ferrer in Spain.
